Grontmij Wins Corporate Responsibility Award

The Albrighton flood alleviation scheme asset delivery team has picked up a second award.

The Severn Trent Community awards which were held at the NEC on the 1st July, were judged by John Guilford, partnership manager of Business in the Community.

Gold for Grontmij

The Albrighton scheme secured the gold award against some strong competition. Over 70 properties were flooded in 2007 and Grontmij’s involvement began with a hydraulic study which identified the root causes. In response to these findings, Grontmij designed a £8 million drainage scheme including a 1.8m diameter storage tunnel. The contract for construction was awarded to Barhale.

Community inclusion

The potential impact of 18 months of construction on the local residents and businesses was of great concern to the MP, Local Authorities and the Traders’ Association. From the earliest days the team made every effort to include the community in the project.

Despite the inevitable disruption excellent relations have been maintained throughout with the Albrighton project commended for its ‘extensive community consultation’ which included community presentations and a drop in centre allowing people to learn about the scheme and raise any concerns. These efforts allowed for the forging of excellent community relations and smooth delivery.

'A new benchmark'

Will Dorman, Grontmij’s project manager, said: “This award is the second that we have won for the Albrighton project and we are proud that it is now widely held as a new benchmark for positive community engagement”.
